There aren’t very many stores that you can go in and be able to buy whatever you want in the WHOLE store. (Unless maybe if your last name is “Gates.”)
I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that Mr. & Mrs. Gates do not read blogs about decorating a home on a budget…. [Ha!]
But, this feeling of being able to buy any item you want? It’s exactly what can happen when you shop at…
The Dollar Tree. (Would it be taking it too far to cue the Heavenly Choir?)
My husband once asked what it was about this store that I liked and the above fact was exactly what I told him: “Where else can you go in and be able to afford anything in the whole entire store?”
Now, I realize some of you might not be believers. You might think there is NO WAY there are items from Dollar Tree you would want to put in your home. (That’s ok! We can still be friends!) You might have even gone in before with an open mind and not been impressed. (I’ve done that at times myself!)
BUT I am here to show you some of the holiday items that I spotted when I went to Dollar Tree recently. (This will hopefully help you weed through the items that are a real “find” and those that, well, miss the mark. Not every bargain is a “good deal.”)
Did you know that Dollar Tree sells seasonal decor items?
The trick to finding the “good stuff’ is to go super early. Yep, you might have to be one of “those people.” (Some people may even roll their eyes at you when they see your shopping cart and think you are rushing the season. That is OK sister, persevere!)
See these burlap pumpkins from this post here?
Yep, got these from the Dollar Tree. They are very similar to ones I saw at Micheals, Target, and Hobby Lobby, but I bought 5 of them for the cost of 1 at those other stores. (I just had to go to Dollar Tree at the beginning of August to snag them.)
When it comes to getting good items AND good deals at Dollar Tree, sometimes that saying “the early bird gets the worm” really IS true….
NOW is the time to be looking at Dollar Tree for Christmas items. Some of the things they won’t run out of (wrapping paper), but others will be hard to find come December.
I’m going to walk you through some things I saw on my recent trip and my thoughts on them (almost all of these ended up in my shopping cart).

Item 1: Floral Stems
The first thing I make a bee-line to are floral stems. The best ones get picked over fast. These pine stems I spotted were already getting low….in October! These look the same as some I saw at Hobby Lobby for much more!
Item 2: Ornaments
Need to decorate a tree on the cheap this holiday? These ornaments will keep you on budget! They have all sorts of colors. Once it’s on your beautiful tree, nobody is going to know whether it’s heirloom quality, or cost $1. You can’t beat 10 ornaments for $1!)
Any of the ornaments pictured above would also be great for decorating a wreath, garland, or small trees on a patio!
If your tree is all set for decorations, these ornaments would also make great gift toppers. You could really up your wrapping game with a cute ornament that would also double as a little gift for the recipient!
Item 3: Craft Supplies
When looking for fun crafts to do with the kids each season, Dollar Tree is a great place to look first! They usually always have seasonal craft kits and supplies. These are great to stock up on for stocking stuffers, or to entertain the kids while they are on break from school. (Remember: things with snowmen and more “winter” themes would be great to get to have on hand in the months after Christmas, when it’s too cold to get the kiddos outside!)
If you are helping coordinate a craft for your child’s class or Sunday school, or maybe throwing a fun holiday party or playdate, Dollar Tree has items to help! Things that you are likely to find include: holiday pom poms, stickers, foam shapes, jingle bells, etc.
Item 4: Gift Wrapping Supplies
Did you know that Dollar Tree sells nice gift bags? They also have gift boxes, tissue, and wrapping paper.
If you have little kids that would love licensed character wrapping paper, check Dollar Tree! (I have seen Disney Princess, Star Wars, Cars, Minions, Legos, Paw Patrol, Tinker Bell, and others.) It’s all going to be ripped off in 3.2 seconds anyway, so why not save several dollars on the wrapping paper?
Item 5: Holiday Cards
I know that a lot of people do photo cards, but if you are looking for a cost saving measure, or want to have your kids write cards to loved ones, teachers, etc. then Dollar Tree has some good options.
I was able to look inside the boxes and one of the packs (of 12 cards) was almost exactly the same on the inside as ones I bought at Target a couple years ago! Definitely check them out and see if your store has any cute varieties!
Item 6: Stocking Stuffers & Operation Christmas Child Items
I love to find a few little things to put in my childrens’ stockings, but I don’t usually have a huge budget for these items (since the main budget is used for what is sitting under the tree).
I found two plastic guitars at Dollar Tree that I put in my son’s stocking last Christmas (my husband was hesitant about getting them, thinking they would be broken by Christmas afternoon). They are actually still going strong and are probably what he has played with MOST this year out of all of the presents he got for Christmas (ha!).
Some ideas of stocking stuffers you can find for your kiddos: puzzles, coloring books, word search books, stickers, cups with favorite characters on them, “magic” washcloths (Do you remember doing those as a kid?), art kits (like the ones I mentioned above), toy balls, small toys, candy, gel pens, hair bows….So many options! If you want to find out more information about “Operation Christmas Child” please see the link here. It is a wonderful (and easy) way to get your kiddos involved in “giving back” this holiday season! (Collection week is mid-November.)
There you have it!
My “Top 6” things to look for at Dollar Tree this holiday.
Anyone else getting a little excited for Christmas? If you think I get excited for fall, just wait for Christmas my friends!

I love you ideas and we just had a new Dollar Tree store open about 6 blocks from us. I have a feeling we will be in there a lot. I am a retired nurse and have so many ideas but never the time or energy to DIY. Now the ideas just flow like a waterfall. I love your site and will be watching it from now on. Cut your Christmas cards up for gift tags and mod podge the pictures and letters on wood signs for next year.
