Mildly Obsessed with Pillows

Love pillows? Learn how to make this super chic and super simple one with NO SEWING! That's right! Click to the post to learn how!

I have a thing for pillows. No, really. I’m not just talking about a casual appreciation for them….

Let me prove it with this quick little illustration.

Move Over Husband, There’s a New Pillow in Town

I sleep with 5 pillows at night…not joking. My love for pillows runs deep. (I seem to add a pillow with each pregnancy…. My husband says we can’t have any more children because if we did, HE wouldn’t be able to fit in the bed anymore….(Don’t make me pick between you and my pillows, Mr. PearTreeHome!) You’d think with all of these full-size pillows on our bed (my 5 and my husband’s-ahem-1 pillow) there wouldn’t be any others on the bed. Actually, there are 4 more PLUS 4 throw pillows. Yep, a grand total of 14 pillows all for one queen-size bed. (That’s not excessive, right?)

The Hygge Life

This carries over to downstairs too. I’ve heard that “hygge” is the Danish practice that embraces coziness. Well, bring on the Hygge life! I didn’t even know I was practicing this decor fad! (Man, even when I’m on trend I don’t even know it! Let’s memorialize this right here. Note: Morgan was “with the times” for once. And also of note: it’s pronounced “hoo-gah”) There has to be something to this “hoo-gah” life though because if you think about it, Denmark DOES have the reputation for being the happiest country in the WORLD!

Loving this “hygge” life (I should get a t-shirt with this on it, as I CLEARLY am their poster child….) If you’ve stuck with me this far, you must be a hygge sister. Want to be twins and wear the matching t-shirt with me?

[Edited to add: y’all they actually DO have t-shirts! Bwahaha!]

We might not want to wear the t-shirts, but let’s face it, we DO want the pillows! Aren’t throw pillows so homey and cozy? This tutorial will help you make a bunch that look chic and professionally made, but for only a couple bucks! And the best part? They are No-SEW!

I know you are probably wondering how that’s possible. I’ll share the secret: they are made with double-sided placemats and fabric glue! I have made lots of throw pillows over the years, but using fabric glue was new for me! I was inspired to try it from Natalie who blogs at The Vintage Porch.

Here’s What You Need

Love pillows? Learn how to make this super chic and super simple one with NO SEWING! That's right! Click to the post to learn how!
  • double-sided placemat (This means there is a front-side & a second piece of fabric for the back-side. I got mine from Target.)
  • fabric glue (I used this kind here.)
  • seam ripper (Not absolutely necessary, but definitely super helpful!!)
  • pillow stuffing or insert

Let’s Make a Pillow

  • Pick out a placemat (remember the whole “double-sided” thing). A great place to look is Target (you are probably there for something else already), Home Goods, Marshalls, etc.

  • Along one side, cut and pull out the stitches. (This is where that seam ripper comes in handy-BIG time!)

  • Stuff the placemat (you know, the wannabe pillow) with stuffing/ batting/pillow form.
  • Place a bead of glue carefully along the edge where you removed the seam.

  • Use binder clips to hold the front and back pieces of fabric together while the glue dries. The glue I used said to let dry for 24 hours, but I just let it dry overnight and it was good to go.

  • After glue dries, remove binder clips (also called “bulldog clips”) and enjoy your pillow.

You can even light a candle, cover up with a blanket, and nestle down into that new pillow of yours. We’re “loving that hygge life” after-all, right? [wink]

I LOVE pillows, too! This looks like a super fun project and fairly easy, too! I’d love to hear how they hold up after a little wear. Thanks for the idea!

I will let you know! So far so good! We basically are putting them through “quality control” over here (we aren’t the gentlest with pillows…) Thanks so much for stopping by the blog April!

This is a genius idea! Has inspired me to think about other projects using placemats.

It definitely makes me stop and look more at the table linen sections at stores now!
