I kind of left ya hanging there on the progress from the shared bedroom makeover. Let’s be clear… I’m using “makeover” in the loosest sense of the word. This room DID get a transformation, but it was just a quick one; more like a refresh than a makeover.
When you are mondo pregnant (it’s a technical obstetric term) and it’s winter (Boo! Can’t paint furniture outside.), there’s only so much you can do to transform a space.
Mostly the mondo pregnant part was what was holding me back. Anyone who’s ever been “mondo” before knows that everything (and I do mean everything) becomes a feat of determination. Putting on your socks and shoes? Basically an acrobatic stunt. Buckling a toddler into the car? You are basically a qualifier for the Olympics, my friend.
SO you can see that getting this room exactly the way I might have wanted had to be sacrificed to just ensure that the room: a) got done before the baby arrived (see post here) b) was basically put together “enough” to qualify as nearly done.
Painted furniture will have to wait. Even though I’m not pregnant anymore, we still have the whole winter-not-able-to-paint-anything-outside issue.
One thing that could have been done, but wasn’t? Nothing was hung up on the walls.
There has been a pile of things waiting to be hung up that has been taunting me since November. In actuality it’s only three things leaning against a dresser. But it doesn’t matter. They’re taunting me I tell you! (The fact that mirrors, chalkboards, and pictures can’t talk is insignificant. I can FEEL the judgement every time I step into the room. Ha!
So, this week I couldn’t take it anymore and decided it.was.time.
It was time to say, “Take that, taunters! I WILL conquer you!”

A while ago I had seen a quote that I knew I wanted to put in my kiddos’ “beach” room. It said, “In high tide or low tide, I will be by your side.” YES! It’s hard to find a good quote that goes well for brothers and sisters. I’ve seen cute signs that would work well in a girls’ room or a boys’ room, but I needed something that would fit into our sister-brother room. (At least until the nursery becomes a “boy” room and the current “beach” room becomes the “girl” room.) But I like that it will still work anywhere in our home too. (Score!) The baby signs that are gender-specific are uber cute, but don’t last as long.
I had some canvases that I got from Hobby Lobby when they were on clearance. (They’ve been just sitting in my closet waiting for me.) I love having a few craft items on hand like this. That way they are ready whenever I get the itch to DIY something.
All I had to do was go shop my closet for a canvas and a blue paint pen. (Want to see where I used to keep craft supplies? It was a nightmare! Really! When you see the before pictures, you will see what I mean!)
To make this sign, all you need are the things mentioned above: canvas and paint pen (you could also use a wood board, etc.) and you will also need a template for the quote. I don’t trust myself to freehand something that is going up on a wall. I’ll be a little more adventurous and try that with my kitchen chalkboard, but not for signs. Templates are your friend! They make everything come out perfectly. (See the post here for detailed tutorial.)
Once you have the template printed out, just rub pencil on the back (or use tracing paper-I never have any of that on hand), then flip the words over and trace around them. Just like magic, the pencil lead will leave a nice “cheater” line for you to go back and color in with a paint pen.
This is a great project to do while you have a movie playing. (A good classic that you know the words too since you will have your head down, tracing letters for a good chunk of this project. For me that would probably be one of several Christmas movies: Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street, etc.)
So grab a movie, a canvas, and a paint pen, and get crackin’ making this sign! Oh! And click below to snag the template too. Unless you go rouge and freehand your signs, you daredevil, you.

Hi Morgan! I’ve been bitten by the sign bug….. I’m really new to this process and until now have only used stencils and paintbrushes. They usually end up looking like a grade schooler’s art project. Bought my 1st paint pen from Walmart and WOW! What a big difference! Im wondering what pens you use and recommend. Looking on the Amazon site, (another addiction of mine), there are so many to choose from. Please keep the tutorials coming. I love them! Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful ideas!
Kindly,
Stacy

Thanks so much for your kind words, Stacy! You made my day. =) Watch out for that “sign bug”-that little sucker can make you have a house FULL of signs before you know it! Ha! For pens, I’ve used the Sharpie paint pens and also have some inexpensive ones from Michaels. Being an Amazon Prime fan myself, I will have to do a paint pen order soon! (For “research” of course…wink 😉
