I am starting to realize that I have a little bit of a problem when it comes to stars… They slowly are making their way around my house. I have 4 or 5 now….Yep…I think that’s the start of a collection. All total I think I’ve only spent $7 for all of them. Today I am going to show off the newest member of the star “crew”.
But friends? This fella is MASSIVE. And you want to know the coolest part? This wooden sign didn’t cost a thing. Can you believe it!? Free! And if that wasn’t great enough, it also took less than an hour to make this diy star sign. Check out what it’s looking like all finished!

Look What You Made Me DO
This heading is the closest I’ve come to a Taylor Swift song. (Well, except for the “Love Story” song–because my husband and I “were both young when I first saw [him]”. But this post isn’t about that (you can read more here). THIS is about what happened when we took apart an old, crumbly, did-not-want-it-anymore-raised-vegetable-garden.
Most people probably wouldn’t have looked at that pile of boards thinking they wanted to keep them, but being cheap ahem, resourceful, makes you rethink things. And these boards wanted to be a sign. A rather BIG sign. And who am I to squash dreams like that. So in reality, I’m not a crazy wood hoarder at all. I’m a dream maker.
Bwahahaha. (I’m totally going to start telling my husband this when he thinks I’ve gone a little too far with some of my ideas….wink.) It’s the boards’ fault, ok? They made me do it!
M.C. Hammer Time (Ok, Drill Time)
All I did was lay the boards out on the ground and place 3 boards perpendicular on the sides and middle. I also slid another board as I went along underneath where I wanted to screw (just to have something flat to push against). If you are making a sign that needs to actually hang on a wall, I think I would also place a board diagonally. My DIY sign was just going to be sitting on top of the buffet table in my dining room, so I wasn’t worried about it going anywhere. Mr. PearTreeHome took some photos of me…. (Because if there isn’t a photo of me using the drill, it probably didn’t happen, right?)
Yep, I was actually the one who did this entire project! All you need is a drill and some wood screws and you can make your own wooden sign. (Oh, and some wood. That’s kind of essential for a large wooden sign….)
We Built This City…Err Star
Let’s pause this blog post with a little singalong….”We built this city. We built this city on rock ‘n roll.” Nothing like a little Starship to get the creative juices flowing when making a project. (Ha!) Although I guess we would need to change the words….”We built this sign. We built this sign with wood and screws.” When listening to the song on Amazon music, it is on a playlist called “Rock of Ages: Hard Rock Hits of the 80s”….um…Hard rock?! If that is the case, I am TOTALLY a hard rock fan! (I didn’t even realize it. Does this make me cooler? It certainly sounds cooler….Yeah. I listen to hard rock….What? Who’s my favorite group? Led Zeppelin? Nope. Starship. Ha! Doesn’t have the same punch, does it?
Now that the wood was ready, it was time to put something on the sign. There are SO many options, but I decided to do a huge star. (After all of the star references, you’re shocked, right?)
To paint the star, I used some masking tape and just eye-balled the shape on the board- easy peasy! I watered down some interior paint I had and painted in the star shape. Make sure you put your sign flat on the ground at this point because the paint will be runny from watering it down (and also place something underneath it if you are worried about paint getting on anything).
Right now I have the sign on an IKEA buffet. I have plans to probably paint this at some point (no furniture is safe from me lately!) I might even go rogue and maybe do a color that isn’t white! Gasp! (I like to live on the edge! Ha!)
I am super pleased with how this sign turned out. It’s massive, so it takes up a considerable amount of wall space (which is perfect as I haven’t quite decided what I want to do in this space yet), AND maybe the most important part is that it was FREE. You can’t beat that price, huh? What would you paint on a massive sign? A star? Tell me in the comments!
