Make This Easy Paint Chip Wall Art

For the Love of Paint

I am somebody who really appreciates the power of PAINT when it comes to DIY projects. There is very little can give you as much “bang for your buck” as paint can. (And in so little time too!)

Here are some projects where PAINT has played MVP:

  • Painted Furniture
  • Master Bedroom $100 Makeover
  • More Painted Furniture

I am always amazed at how much paint can transform something. It’s incredible how one little tool in your DIY arsenal can go so FAR in giving a room or piece of furniture a whole new look.

What to Do With All of Those Beautiful Colors?

How to Use Paint Chips for DIY Art

When I am looking for the right paint color for a project, I tend to grab a handful of paint chip samples to take home to test in the space and “mull over”. Do you do this too? I never want to throw away those lovely paint chips though…because I always think that surely they would be great for some SOME sort of craft….

Anyone else guilty of this when it comes to craft supplies?

Materials Needed for DIY Paint Chip Art

The Hero of this project was this little paper punch.

There are very few supplies you need for this project. (Which makes it even better, right?!)

  • triangle paper punch (You CAN trace and cut all of your triangles, but this makes it SUPER simple!)
  • cardstock
  • double-sided tape
  • frames (These are the ones I used, but these are a tad cheaper and look comparable.)

Add a Splash of Your Favorite Color

If you have paint chip samples, chances are you are a fan of that color. (You obviously liked it enough to consider buying it.) For me, that color is blue. I had LOTS of shades of blues and blue-greens paint chips.

It’s super simple to make this wall art.

  1. Grab all of your paint chip samples you have been hoarding saving and start cutting!

2. Cut and keep cutting- or in my case, punch and keep on punching. The little triangle paper punch worked GREAT! Highly recommend it for this project!

3. After punching all of my triangles, I sorted them into color groups. This is optional, I just wanted to see how many blue, green, gray, and pink tones I had.

4. Now it’s time for the fun! Do a “test run” and lay your design out on a sheet of paper. You don’t HAVE to do this, but I wanted to see what my design wold look like and make sure all of my triangles would “play nicely” together. (It also made it easy to make sure that there were not any repeats in colors.)

5. I started at the top of my paper (in the center). I found it helpful to use a pencil and a ruler to draw a line so I would be sure to keep my triangles straight.

6. Tip: I found it worked really well to use double-sided tape to adhere the paint chips to my cardstock. (This is the exact tape I used and it held really well- I was even able to reposition a couple of rogue triangles.)

7. Frame your creation! I used these frames and was happy with them. I liked that they came with mats.

Now, step back and enjoy your new art!

I had enough paint samples to make 3 and placed them on top of the bookcase we have in our “playroom” area.

I love the pop of color they add to the space.

Paint Chip Art Looks Great in Kid Spaces

If you are wanting to play around with color, kid spaces are an easy way to be a little more adventurous and experiment with colors you might be too nervous to use in your main living areas. (This free DIY art project is a great way to play with paint color in an easy, non-comital way.)

Paint Chip Art is Easy Enough for Kids to Make

If your kiddos are craft, this is easy enough for kids to make AND looks cute. Can I get an “Amen. Hallelujah!” from all the mamas? (We’ve all had to display “creations” we were a little under-enthused about, right?)
