Don’t you just love fall?
The cooler temperatures (Yay for being able to wear jeans and leggings without sweating profusely within 10.5 seconds of stepping outside!), the pretty leaves (golden yellow are my fav), and the pumpkins.
What is fall without pumpkins? (Pumpkin bread, pumpkin roll, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice candles….it’s a glorious time of year!)
We’ve always gotten pumpkins for our front porch. Some years we’ve gone “whole hog” and gotten mums too. This year I decided to use my little ladder (you can see it here) to take my little mums and pumpkins to the “next level”- literally, since it’s a ladder and they are on different rungs. Ha!) But I decided this week that I wanted to do one more thing to get my porch looking spiffy for fall: a “welcome” sign.

Now, because we are friends I will let you in on a little secret….This sign did not turn out how I originally thought it would. Originally I was planning on just having white letters to spell out “WELCOME” and that would be it. Simple. Well, my paint pen and my hand had other ideas! I accidentally made my letter “O” too thick in one spot and tried to fix it, but only made it worse. Errrr.
I’d already taken the time to stain my board and trace and fill-in all of the letters. I should have been done with this project and off to style my new sign on the porch. But….it just didn’t look right. Sigh.
I even tried to see if it “wasn’t as bad as I was thinking” by asking Jason. His words? “That doesn’t really look like Morgan quality.” (Note: “Morgan quality”….? I didn’t know there was such a thing.)
So…I stared at it for a day (well, not a solid day, rather I mulled it over in my head) and then I had a thought -shocking, I know!- What if I turned my botched, sad letter “O” into a pumpkin?
So, my friends, that is how this sign came about! Pumpkin to the rescue!
See, told you pumpkins are the best! [Wink]
Want to make your own? (See free printable template link below.)
Get all the details and picture tutorial here! (The only thing different was making the pumpkin. I just used some acrylic craft paints I had on hand and whipped it up. If you can draw a circle, you can definitely paint a pumpkin! Promise!) Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you intended, but they end up working out for the best. That’s what the husband thinks about this sign (he’s a keeper-well, him AND the sign).
I’d love to see your sign and how it looks on your porch!

Very sweet. I especially like the little ladder!

Aww thanks! But I think, as my parent, you are a little partial. I like that little ladder too- thanks for giving it to me! 😉

Morgan thank you for the laundry humor. I thought when my kids where raised the laundry would be done and put away. Nope! It still is in baskets or dryer. I scold myself and say “laundry smells so good right out of the dryer”. But I weigh it over in my mind good smelling laundry or crafting. Crafting always win. Oh! Did I mention I love your sign? Me and my silhouette are BFF’s right now. Enjoy your fall👍 Laundry will always be there but the beautiful leaves won’t.

It definitely isn’t a super exciting job! I would choose to craft too! Thanks so much for your lovely comment. It brightened my day!
P.S. You have a silhouette?! I have crafter envy! 😉

Thank you for showing us it’s okay to be perfectly imperfect. I personally think the sign came out so much better than ordinary with the addition of the pumpkin. Nice recovery or maybe that’s how it was supposed to be. Great inspiration.

You are so sweet, RoseAnn! Thanks for your comment. Yes! It’s something I excel at- being imperfect! Ha! But you are so right. It is so easy to get caught up in trying to do things perfectly. It can be quite an unhealthy trap! Sometimes being “perfectly imperfect,” like you said, ends up being “just right.”
Hugs,
Morgan

Love your blog! I do have a question. Where do you get your wood pieces to use for your signs?
Morgan says
Hi Carrie! Thanks so much for your sweet comment! For this wood sign I used a pine board that had come out of my parents’ kitchen. I did a quick swipe of stain on it. You could check out Lowes or Home Depot and find an inexpensive pine board. They will even cut it down for you for free if it’s not the length you want! Would love to see your sign when you get it made!

I love your ideals and you make them sound so easy. I cant wait to make a welcome sign for my porch. The transfer for the words with the pencil on the back is brillant wish i would have found it before i bought and those signs. It is going to make alot of people happy with homemade gifts this year !
