This DIY rope mirror is my favorite kind of project! It is cheap (ahem, “budget-friendly”), easy, and quick (easily made during nap-time with lots of time to spare-wahoo!).
I just am so tickled with how it turned out! (Let’s face it, not all my projects turn out the way I saw them first in my head….)
“Itch to Switch” Each Season?
The weather is “starting” to get warmer here in Richmond. (Although it keeps teasing us! Our temperatures have been fluctuating 20 degrees from one day to the next!) And that’s giving me the itch to switch up some things. I’ve been wanting to trade-out decor that I have been using all winter and just add a few things here and there to give areas a FRESH look for the warmer weather that’s coming! (I have faith people! Sandals don’t forget me! I’m coming for you SOON!)
Say WHAT? Make a Mirror with Cardboard!
I feel like I keep seeing rope mirrors. I really like this one, but DON’T like the price tag! The idea of having one just got burned in my brain. Does this happen to you? You know something has gotta be in your life when you JUST can’t shake it out of there!
Sometimes this can’t be a reality. (New sofa? Not in the budget. And I can’t very well make one with cardboard and rope….) But rope and cardboard is JUST what I used to make my new mirror! Keep reading and I will share the SUPER SIMPLE way I did it so that you can go make your own!!

Supplies Needed for Rope Mirror
- Glue Gun (and plenty of glue sticks)
- cardboard circles (I used a pack of cake boards that I got with a 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby)
- rope (I used 1/4 inch sisal rope I picked up at Home Depot.)
- craft mirror (You can get a 2 pack from Hobby Lobby for just a couple bucks.)
Learn the “Ropes”
How to Make Your Rope Mirror
1.Start by gluing your craft mirror to the center of your cardboard circle. (I actually traced around my mirror to make sure I glued it where I wanted.)
2. Take rope and lay it around your mirror to see how much you will need to have the ends of your rope meet. (I cut each “row” of rope individually and then glued. I thought this gave it more of a finished look. If you want to just use one continuous strand of rope, that will work, but your rows will not be as even. )
3.Use your glue gun to place a trail of glue along where the rope should lay. Lay the rope down on glue carefully and press to secure (remember, that glue is HOT!). (When you get to rows that are larger, I found it worked better to just put glue down for half of the circle. Stop. Press into glue and then put more glue down for the other half. If I did more than that my glue would harden before I had a chance to lay the rope on it.
4. That’t IT! For each new row of your rope mirror, just keep laying your rope on the cardboard to see how much you need, cut, glue, repeat. (Tip: I also separated a length of rope into strands and glued one strand around the center. This prevented being able to see the edge of the mirror.)
Rope Mirror DIY for the WIN!
It really is easy peasy! Can you believe it? I was so excited when I finished because it looks exactly how I was picturing it in my head- gotta love when that happens!
Total cost for this rope mirror was about $5! (I could have saved more money if i had just used some cardboard I already had, but since I was making a circle, I didn’t want to have to worry about cutting it exactly right. The pack of cake boards costs $6 for 6. Which made me feel the need to make two mirrors….That leaves four leftover…..I wonder who else in my life needs a DIY mirror?? Ha!
Neutral Mirror, Natural Texture
I love these neutral mirrors with their natural texture! (And as a plus, they are sturdy, but light enough to use 3M Command Hooks to hang. If you haven’t tried 3M’s velcro hooks, they are one of my favorite hacks ever, seriously!)
