Can most of us admit it? There is just something about the show “Fixer Upper” that appeals to us. We can’t quite put our finger on it….but it’s there.
So now we have the urge to add a bit of modern, farmhouse chic to our décor.
I’m always WAY behind in trends and knowing about “current” things. But, thanks to Netflix for airing the show for an (extremely) short time, I was able to watch 2 seasons.
Netflix! Please fight the good fight and find a way to bring the show back!
(We don’t have cable, so I’m at your mercy, Netflix! Help a gal out!)
Magic
There is just something about Joanna Gaines and her “magic.” You hear that term used on the show by clients and it DOES appear to be true. Home girl can turn a regular, ho-hum room into an AMAZING one.
Now, I am SURE a lot of photo editing and amazing technology peeps are on staff to make sure everything looks picture perfect, but admit it, when you see the finished product, the:
“Are you ready to see your fixer upper?” moment, you are usually pretty impressed when that ginormous photo is wheeled away.
Am I right?
Popularity Has Its Perks
There are some pros and cons to the marketing phenomenon that is the “Magnolia” Brand.
Farmhouse style, Joanna Gaines-approved items, are EVERYWHERE. (This is a nice thing)
BUT, that doesn’t mean that those items are going to cost next to nothing. (Even some thrift stores, once the “go-to places” for finding great bargains, are seeming a little more expensive these days as popularity is increasing.)
But FEAR NOT my faithful DIY friend!
You can always make something yourself!
Have you noticed that wreaths (and just plants in general) are frequent showstoppers in Joanna’s wall hangings?? Like this one here from Magnolia Market. (It’s $98 and an additional $8 in shipping.) Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely beautiful!
But…THIS boxwood wreath only cost me $6.
3 plant stems from Hobby Lobby, a bit of wire, and BAM! We were in business!
(A boxwood wreath has been on my to-do list for QUITE a while. My new blogging friend, Jillynn, over at My Red Front Door, inspired me to get my backside in gear and finally MAKE one. You can check her pretty wreath out here.)
Too Easy To Call It “Wreath Making”
Now, if you have never made a wreath before, don’t back away in fear yet, my friend.
I don’t think we could even CALL this “making a wreath”….you are LITERALLY just bending some floral stems to make a circular shape and wiring them in inconspicuous spots. (Really!)
This is a PERFECT project for a first-timer! So don’t let fear stand in your way! Go grab some faux greenery and show it who’s BOSS! Ha!

Here are the 3 steps (if you can even call them “steps”):
- Get out greenery stems and wire. (You know a project is super easy when 1 of the 3 “steps” only requires putting a couple things on a table….)
- Bend stems so that they are slightly curved. Lay stems together to form a circle (And so that greenery is all pointing in the same direction-This is a key part!) Continue to bend the thicker “stem” area at the bottom so all branches are bent and (when put together) make a circular shape.
- Wrap little pieces of wire at different places around your newly formed circle and Viola! You have a wreath!
See! Told you it was SO EASY! Really, don’t let this one intimidate you. Just keep bending and wrapping. (That sounds like a great stage name for a mommy rap group:
“Bending and Wrapping”)….Yeah, I know…(I couldn’t help myself!)
Finding a Home
Once that wreath is all done, you’ll want somewhere to hang your new beauty. (It would look smashing on a door, but… if YOU want to see it more than your neighbors get to, then find a wall inside your home!)
It looks great hanging on a mirror or a frame! Like the frame here:
This frame kept calling my name at a consignment sale. (I was there with my mom and I think she can attest to the fact that it seemed to have some sort of magnetic pull on me.) I probably walked by to go “visit” it 3 times before I snatched it up to take home.
It looked like this when we first met, so I think that might be why I didn’t have to “fight anybody off” for her….
(The magnetic attraction could also be due to that fact that this frame was only $4. Wahoo!)
A little bit of paint and she was feeling MUCH more perdy!
(Alright…a LOT of paint….This was some sort of plastic material and for some reason my chalk paint was taking forever to get good coverage, so I finally gave up and resorted to spray paint. MUCH quicker!)
Find a Frame to Fit Your Fancy
Now, I realize that you can’t go out and find this EXACT frame, but whenever I am in Goodwill I ALWAYS see frames. Many of which are 50% off. (Didn’t know Goodwill had sales? Tip: Check the big sign when you enter the store and it will tell you what color tag is 50% off that week.) [Insert “Happy Thrifter Dance” here]
So even though you may not be able to find this SAME frame, you can get pretty close (AND for the same price)!
DIY sisters REJOICE!
Wondering what might be right above this sweet little frame and wreath on my kitchen wall?
Yep, you read that right….
Lettuce turnip the beet.
Because let’s face it, life’s too stressful sometimes….
A little laughter, in unexpected places, is good for the soul. (Tips for making your own wooden sign using a super easy method are found in this post.)
