I’ve got to come clean with you. I’ve had a sofa table that I’ve been meaning to share with you for quite a while. I thought up this DIY project after finding some fun and chippy stair spindles and Mr. PearTreeHome was kind enough to build it for me… almost (cough cough) 2 years (cough cough) ago…. I guess I’ve just been test-running the table for that period of time; putting it through a strenuous “quality control” process over here. (Yes! That’s it! We will go with that explanation and not a forgetful brain.)
Easy Beginner Project
This was an easy project to put together in a Saturday afternoon. (Well, it’s easy for me to say that, since I didn’t technically build it, but from my supervisory role, it looked pretty ” doable.” HA!)

You Need Some Legs
The first step in this project is to find some fun stair spindles that can be your table’s legs. So that means a trip to your nearest architectural salvage store. (You could always buy new, but that doesn’t allow for the “treasure hunt.”)
Once we had our “legs” all we needed was a board for the top and another piece of wood (to make a frame underneath the top) for the legs to be attached to. You can probably tell at this point that my “supervisory role” meant I wasn’t privy to the exact measurements/ what kind of lumber we used/ etc.
Let’s pause here so I can go measure….
Measurements for a DIY Sofa Table
Here is a diagram of the table (clearly not drawn to scale, but these were the measurements we used):
Making a DIY Sofa Table
First Mr. PearTreeHome cut the tabletop to size. (The chart above shows measurements that we used to make our table. You can easily adjust to make the table the exact size you would like or need.)
Then he created a frame for the underside of the table. This will be used to secure the legs of the table to.
Since we didn’t want the legs of our table to be quite as high as the spindles’ length were originally, we (“we”…*wink) cut them down. But I had an idea for what I wanted to do with the extra pieces. They worked great to connect the legs together; it made the table more sturdy AND looked better! (Win-WIN!)
Painting Sofa Table with Milk Paint
Once the table was done, it literally sat in my living room for two years without anything else done to it….(I mean, I DO like natural wood and I wanted to take a bit of time to think of how I wanted to finish it….stain? paint? But somehow the time got away from me!) A few weeks ago, it was finally time to get this table FINISHED! I finally decide to pull our some milk paint I had on hand (you can find it here). I used it for this chalk board project here.
Finished Sofa Table Lookin’ Pretty
Here’s what it looks like all finished! Funny how just a little paint gives it a whole new look!
We added trim to give it a bit more pizzaz. (Let’s be clear. I am a lazy furniture-finisher… Clearly. Ahem. It took me two years to slap some milk paint on this sucker…. So filling in nail holes just seemed too much…Maybe in two more years I will decide that’s a priority. But for now, I’m completely happy with it like this.)
