Wahoo!! It’s that time of year! It’s $100 Room Challenge time! Twice a year bloggers and Instagram-ing diy-enthusiasts come together to participate in this fun challenge. It’s like Trading Spaces (remember that show?), but that $1000 budget shrinks to $100 (and YOU get to make all of the choices….So maybe not exactly like Trading Spaces…but you get the idea.) Erin over at Lavender Lemons & Laundry came up with this idea.
Past $100 Room Challenge Reveals
I have participated in the $100 Room Challenge two other times: when we redid our sunroom (aka “playroom”) and our laundry room (aka “the former pit of doom”). Both of the spaces turned out to be some of my favorites in my house. Which just goes to show you that a tight budget can go a long way!

Deciding on a Space to Redo
I’m a list girl. Rory Gilmore is my home girl. In one episode somebody teases her about her list-making and she says, “Don’t mock my pro-con lists!” (YES, sister! I’m WITH you!)
In deciding on what space I would do for this challenge I literally made a list of every space and projects for each room that I thought might be helpful for others.
One room I ruled out immediately. I didn’t think it would be possible because what I REALLY wanted to change in the space was the PAINT. This room would need at least 2 gallons and I didn’t think my $100 budget would allow for very much after buying paint. But then I remembered that Labor Day usually brings paint sales…. wahoo! I found a promotion for a mail-in-rebate that Lowe’s was offering on paint! (I could save $15 PER gallon….$30 saved! Game on!)
The space I decided to do….drum roll….(I feel like Clarke Griswold in Christmas Vacation….is my…
master bedroom!
What I Have to Work With
Now, with $100, you really have to flex your creative muscle. But that’s what I love about this challenge (because let’s face it, that is probably the “muscle” that’s in the best shape on this gal! Ha!
Furniture in Master Bedroom
Paint will use probably close to 50% of my budget. I don’t have access to somewhere with free paint- that would be amazing-so I have to plan for that taking a big chunk of my budget (even with the mail-in-rebate). So, that being said, I need to use the furniture I already have (or if I happen to find something to repurpose). I realized at the Haven Blog Conference a couple months ago that I was amongst “my people” because the attendees were super excited about the thought of finding some type of “treasure” on the side of the road for free. [wink]
What I Need in the Master Bedroom
Office Space & Workout Space
We have a 3 bedroom house and 5 people. Even I, who am bad at math, can realize that that doesn’t leave any extra rooms for a designated office space. I turned a little corner of our bedroom into my “office” and have really liked that I had a place where I can go to work (that has an actual door that can be CLOSED. All mamas that try to get any work done at home, I’m sure can relate!) SO, I definitely need to keep an area in our bedroom where I can work on the website, respond to blog emails, plan for homeschool, etc.
I also have an elliptical machine that I got for a great deal on Facebook Marketplace when I was participating in a Faster Way to Fat Loss 6-week challenge with my friend Sharlie. I really like using it (and same deal with the whole 3 bedroom house/5 people….while it isn’t the prettiest thing to look at. It needs to stay somewhere in the room.)
Master Bedroom Storage
Does anybody else feel like their bedroom becomes storage for all.the.things? I have a bunch of homeschool books and materials I need to store somewhere. At the moment they are in the very large cabinet with glass doors.
I also keep things that I use to wrap presents in the drawers of my great-grandmother’s secretary. (Anybody else have random things stored in unusual places?)
Obviously a BED 😉
One other thing that I feel like I probably don’t need to mention….but I will just to be thorough… You can’t have a bedroom without, well, a bed. (That’s a given, right??)
You know how Disney World is called the “happiest place on earth”? Well, that’s basically how I feel about my bed. Not exactly sure what I want to do with ours yet. I guess I will sleep on it. (Literally.)
Things I LIKE About My Bedroom
- I like the way the sun comes in through the windows. (This room gets great afternoon sun.) Natural light is a big plus for me!
- It’s a fairly good size. (Plenty big for two people…and a cat. He seems to think he owns the place most days.)
- It’s pretty much a “blank canvas” to work with. I haven’t really done anything much to the space in the 6 years we’ve lived here.
Ideas I Have
Follow along on this fun (and frugal!) journey, friends! I’ll post some of my ideas for this space next week! Want to make sure you don’t miss what’s going on? Did you know we can be email buddies and I’ll send you a little sneak peek? I’ll also take you along in my Instagram stories too! Please follow along here!
And don’t forget to check out more of the transformations that are going to be taking place over at my blogging friends’ homes (see the link party below!)

Oh that’s a challenging one, trying to make the bedroom work for all of those uses. I’m sure you’ve got some creative solutions up your sleeve. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
Morgan says
I’m not so sure, Alayna! It’s a lot to ask of one poor bedroom! Ha! Hopefully it will all come together!
Meredith @ The Palette Muse says
I Can’t wait to see what you do in here because it already looks good to me! It’s always fun to see what a new coat of paint can do!
Morgan says
Thanks Meredith! I am excited to be back at doing the $100 Room Challenge with you because I always love the spaces you put together!! I can’t wait to see how your camper comes together!
Terrie says
Can’t wait to see how you are going to make it work. I know you can do it….Happy planning and designing.
Morgan says
Thanks so much, Terrie! I am a tad nervous to tackle this space….but here goes nothing! ha!
I can’t wait to see how your master bathroom comes together- especially what you come up with for over your tub!
Joy says
Wow! I cant wait to see what you do! The master bedroom is such a large space. That makes the “creative muscle” flex even harder! I picked a tiny space for my first challenge on purpose haha! But even just the paint and furniture rearranging will do wonders!
Morgan says
I’m kinda wondering why I decided to go ahead with this space. Our master bedroom has never been “right” to me and it always overwhelms me, so I’ve never really put in much thought or time to decorating it…Eek. No going back now! (Your bathroom is going to be amazing!!)
Erin- Lemons, Lavender, & Laundry says
I hear ya loud and clear on limited storage for everything. We moved into a smaller house which forced us to 1.) get rid of excess and 2.) figure out where to put an office space (that we had in our old house) and a “mudroom” (also lost). I have faith you are going to make the bedroom into a place you will LOVE! Excited to have you joining in again!!!
Morgan says
You are so sweet Erin! Yes, our room is the “if we don’t have a room or space for it, we will figure out a way to fit it into our bedroom” (sigh). But, I’d rather have some of these things taking space in my bedroom then in my kitchen. 😉
